MIPCOM, 15th October 2018 – Beach House Pictures acquires rights to Singaporean super spy Cleopatra Wong, star of three cult 1970s films, for a modern TV reboot.
Beach House Pictures, a Blue Ant Media production company and one of Asia’s largest indies, is internationally renowned for its award winning factual content but is launching a slate of scripted properties including highly sought after spy franchise Cleopatra Wong.
Cleopatra Wong was the creation of Filipino producer Bobby Suarez who, attempting to capitalise on the 1970s trend for super spies, combined elements of American Blaxploitation icon Cleopatra Jones and English MI6 agent James Bond to create the ground breaking Asian Interpol agent from Singapore.
Cleopatra Wong appeared in three classic films; ‘They Call Her Cleopatra Wong’ in 1978, ‘Dynamite Johnson’ a.k.a. ‘Bionic Boy II’ in 1979, and ‘Devil’s Angels’ a.k.a. ‘Devil’s Three’ in 1980.
Four decades later Beach House Pictures has acquired the rights to Bobby’s iconic character with the intention of bringing her back to life for a whole new generation in an original premium scripted TV series and feature documentary.
Jocelyn Little, Managing Director of Beach House Pictures, said:
“We believe the time is absolutely right to reintroduce the world to Cleopatra Wong, a powerful, female, Asian heroine as the lead in a premium television series made in Asia for international fans of Kung Fu, comic books and crime.”
Cinematically, Cleopatra Wong has been a significant influence within the spy and martial arts genres, becoming an icon of popular culture. When legendary director Quentin Tarantino was promoting Kill Bill, featuring Uma Thurman as the samurai sword wielding Bride, he declared, “Cleopatra Wong was a gigantic inspiration.”
Cleopatra Wong is just part of Beach House Pictures’ strategic push into scripted content with a slate of original productions that also includes an adaptation of best-selling children’s horror books Mr. Midnight.
